Assessment


Assessment is the broad name for the collection and evaluation of evidence of a student’s learning. It is integral to teaching and learning and has multiple purposes. Assessment can enhance student engagement and motivation, particularly when it incorporates interaction with teachers, other students and a range of resources.

Assessment

  • provides opportunities for teachers to gather evidence about student achievement in relation to outcomes
  • enables students to demonstrate what they know and can do
  • clarifies student understanding of concepts and promotes deeper understanding
  • provides evidence that current understanding is a suitable basis for future learning.”

Students engage in both formative and formal assessment tasks throughout the Preliminary and HSC Courses which cover a variety of outcomes from the relevant course syllabus documents.

An assessment handbook is provided to all students at the commencement of each year. The assessment handbook outlines the responsibilities of the college and students in regard to assessments, the rules that apply, and importantly the assessment schedules for each course. These schedules clearly indicate the tasks, weightings and sequence of tasks.

On completion of the Preliminary Course schools are required to submit an A to E grade to the NSW Board of Studies for each course studied by students. These grades are determined through aligning students results to the standards. These grades form the RoSA (Record of Student Achievement).

For the Higher School Certificate schools are required to submit a mark out of 100 for a 2 Unit course and a mark out of 50 for a one-unit course to the Board of Studies based on the combined weighted tasks completed by students throughout the course. This mark appears on the Higher School Certificate.
